Summary of most important developments in the sustainability area across Asia.
Restart of climate talks between US and China
On 14 November, presidents Biden and Xi met at the G20 meeting in Bali. The US and China, who are the world´s two biggest polluters, announced a restart of talks on climate issues, which had been frozen since the visit of Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan in August. Resuming the cooperation is critical: in the past, for instance, it made the 2015 Paris Agreement possible.
UN Climate Change Conference (COP27)
The annual UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) took place in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt between 6 and 18 November. The annual UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) which took place in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt between 6 and 18 November has just finished. Unlike the “big COP” which takes place once every 5 years, and where major commitments are made, this year´s conference was an “implementation COP”.
Case Study
Climate adaptation can be achieved by some very simple measures, such as better water management or planting more drought-resistant crops. As well as some more sophisticated ones such as smart farming with the use of drones and using Big Data to inform prudent decisions in farming.[1] So far, climate adaptation has received far less attention and resources than mitigation.[2]
UN Climate Change Conference (COP27)
Another key topic was politically highly controversial: accounting for “loss and damage” (L&D). In practice, this means reparations by wealthy countries who are historically responsible for most carbon emissions to poorer developing countries[1] who suffer the worst consequences.
Just Energy Transition Partnership
One of the key announcements at G20, happening simultaneously with the COP27, was the launch of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) project led by the US and Japan.
Just Energy Transition Partnership
Just transition was another key topic in Sharm El Sheikh. Ensuring that no one is left behind as carbon-heavy jobs may disappear and entire sectors may be abandoned or diminished[1] is critical to make transition socially acceptable.
UN Climate Change Conference (COP27)
During COP27, the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), which is preparing the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards unveiled the Partnership Framework associating more than 20 organizations active in the standards setting work.[1]
